Hides and Woods

Deer opens the Heart Chakra, teaching us to trust and to empower the feminine qualities of love and intuition. It can teach us about gentleness and understanding - to be gentle with ourselves and to offer kindness to all living things. When playing your Deer drum, go on a spiritual hike with the Deer. See yourself walking in the woods with the Deer leading you into amazing depths within your soul. Each step you take will lead you deeper into your spiritual knowing, and to limitless treasure within.

Elk is a symbol of instinct, primal power, and is associated with the Root Chakra. Antlered Elk also speak of defense and the ability to protect that which is precious to us. Elk gives us stamina, strength, and endurance. It assists in healing childhood abuse and addictive patterns. The vibration of Elk opens the Naval Chakra where we carry fears and undigested issues that block us from connecting with our personal power.

In most cultures, Horse is a symbol of life-force. In Native American culture, the horse combines the grounded power of the Earth with the whispers of wisdom in the Winds. In Celtic and Roman culture, the Horse was associated with war and carries the attributes of victory, conquer, valor, and longevity; it is connected with and protected by the goddess Epona. The Horse symbolizes personal drive, passion, and a desire for freedom. It represents the inner strength and driving force that carries us through life.

Maple is a symbol of strength and endurance. In Native American culture, Maple is conisdered the tree of offering, generosity, and balance. The Maple tree was of particular importance to the Algonquian tribes, who developed the art of processing maple sap into maple syrup and maple sugar. Maple sap was considered a gift from the Creator. Maple wood was used to make tools and furniture, and its bark was used as a medicine herb. The Rocky Mountain maple is considered one of the sacred Life Medicines of the Navajo tribe. It has been such an important tree in North America that the Maple leaf has been adopted as the national symbol of Canada. In English-speaking countries, the Maple was believed to repel demons and evil spirits and it was customary to have a piece of Maple wood in the main door. North American settlers used to place Maple leaves at the foot of their beds to ward off demons and encourage sexual pleasure as well as peaceful sleep. It is also an important tree in Celtic mythology and was consecrated to Dana, the Celtic goddess of fertility. In China, Maple is associated with honor, and in Japanese ukiyo-e paintings the leaves represent love.

The Cedar symbolizes cleansing, protection, prosperity and healing. Cedar is one of the most important Native American ceremonial plants, used by many tribes as incense and purifying herb. Cedar is especially associated with prayer, healing, dreams, and protection against disease. Many Salish tribes consider the cedar tree a symbol of generosity and providence, and had special rituals regarding the felling of cedar trees. Cedar is commonly used in sweat lodge ceremonies, and is also one of the plants frequently included in medicine bundles and amulets. Cedar leaves and bark are used as medicine by many tribes. Cedar is excellent at repelling negative energy. It is used for protection and warding away negative spirits.
